Helping Inmates by helping their families
Notice of availability of
THE FAMILY SERVICES PROGRAM
At Valley State Prison for Women
Services provided by the
Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation

"Together we can minimize returns to prison (recidivism)
with family-oriented Rehabilitation"

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is making an effort to provide help for inmate families. They have placed a Family Services Coordinator in the Visiting Area at VSPW on weekends. It is a free service. The Family Service Coordinator can help make connections for a variety of services. It isn't just for children, but for all family members. The following information was taken from The Family Services Program brochure.

One person's conviction should not cause undue harm to the entire family.
* Act responsibly now to strengthen valued family ties.
* Avoid the anger, abandonment, and other feelings that can tear a family apart.
* Do now what you can to protect your children from:
*Truancy, early pregnancy, drug abuse and delinquency.
*Being incarcerated need not deprive an inmate or her children of all the rights and privileges of motherhood and family.
*Use the programs that are available to keep family important to all the family members.
Please consider that the Family Services Program is free to you, and for you!
* Whether you are an inmate, or a member of the family of an inmate, the Family Services Program is provided to help keep your family together.
* The mistake or conviction of a member of the family need not destroy the family.
* For the most part, the inmate is going to eventually be released, and needs to know that there is a place for her.
* Likewise, family -- and especially the children -- need to know that:
                     they have not been deserted,
                     they are not to blame,
                     they can make a difference,
they have a right to be considered,
                     etc., see www.sfcipp.org

If there is a need for support services to keep good people on a positively oriented path, then let's work together. Good family values, and good family relationships are a proven alternative to avoid further imprisonment of the parent or the child!

Here is how to use the program:
