How to Use the Inmate Locator Number
To Find California State Inmates
Inmate Locator: 916-445-6713
This is a toll call! They have 10 lines, and you may get a busy signal, especially on a Monday or Friday. It’s hard to get through. Additionally, once you get through, you’ll probably get their pre-recorded message. The message answers with “I.D. Warrants Unit”, and tells you that ‘your call is important’, and to hang on. Don’t hang up; you’re in the right place.
You will need the name of the inmate and their CDC identification number (that's their W# or T# or X#). If you don’t have their CDC number, you will need their exact name and birthdate.
The Inmate Locator service does not have the inmate’s housing assignment, yard, or bunk number. All they can tell you is which prison your loved one is at. Once you have this information, you’ll need to call the Records Department at your inmate’s prison, and ask them for the housing assignment. [The phone number for VSPW is 559-665-6100]
Be sure to put your loved ones’ full name, inmate number and housing unit number on your mail, along with the name of the prison, its’ correct address (P.O. Box), city, state, and zip code.
Hint: If you send in postcards, the inmates will get them about five times as fast as regular mail. That is because they can scan a postcard fast, and don’t have to open an envelope to check for contraband.
