Release Clothing - The "Parole Box"

Parole Boxes Should be Mailed to:
Valley State Prison for Women
Inmate Name, CDCR#, Housing Unit
21633 Avenue 24 (PO Box 92)
Chowchilla, CA 93610

You previously were able to send in your own parole box -- it was the only box that you could send from your own address!

The Parole Box may only have one change of clothing in it, which includes a shirt or blouse and pants or a dress, shoes, socks or nylons, and a set of underwear (panties & bra). You may also send in a purse. You may NOT send personal identification, such as a driver's license. The prison will issue a temporary simple photo ID for the releasee to take with her.

If the inmate is to be met in the parking lot on the day of her release, the person picking her up will need to bring her ID with them; it cannot be sent in. Also, if you do not have a chance to send parole clothing in a box, you may bring it with you when you pick up your loved one. She can ask for a "paper suit", and change when she meets you. It is cheaper than prison-issued clothing.

Make sure you mark the outside of the box clearly with the words "PAROLE BOX". You will need to have the inmate name, CDCR number, and housing unit number. Address the box to PO Box 92, Chowchilla, CA 93610. If you are sending it by UPS, it should go to 21633 Avenue 24, Chowchilla, CA 93610.

Receiving and Release handles parole boxes. They can be reached at 559-665-6100, extension 5042.

The following information is taken directly from the Department Operations Manual (DOM), Article 54030 and Article 54090.

54030.14 Release Clothing
Inmates scheduled for parole or awaiting discharge may be sent a release clothing package via USPS or common carrier no earlier than 30 days prior to their scheduled parole or discharge date. Inmate release-clothing packages, limited to one set of clothing, shall be retained in a secure location by departmental staff.

54090.5.3 Release Clothing
Inmates shall be encouraged to supply all or a portion of their release clothing. An inmate may have clothing at home to wear upon release preferable to state-issued clothing. Additionally, the inmate's family or friends may be able to supply clothing for release. These possibilities shall be explored with the inmate by institutional staff.
Institutions may offer alteration services for privately furnished release clothing. State-issued release clothing shall be kept to a minimum. State-issued release clothing shall be charged against the inmate's release allowance.

54090.12 Departing Inmates
All inmates departing an institution (i.e., transferred, paroled, and discharged) shall return their complete clothing and linen issue to receiving and release (R&R). The only exception may be items that may be needed for overnight; and these items shall be returned to R&R prior to departure. All items returned shall be posted on CDC Form 176, Clothing Record Card. R&R shall return all items collected to the laundry.

The following information was taken from Title 15:

Article 9 Section 3195 Release Clothing
Inmates scheduled for parole or awaiting discharge may receive a release clothing package via U.S. Postal Service or common carrier no earlier than 30 days prior to their scheduled parole or discharge date. Inmate release clothing packages, limited to one set of clothing, shall be retained in a secure location by the department until their release.

The following information was provided by the Warden's Office in October, 2007.
" Families are still able to send a "Parole Box" to inmates within 30 days of parole. Only one pair of clothes are allowed in the box (No make-up, No Identification, etc.). At this time inmates arent usually given a formal I.D. when they parole, just a picture with their name on it until they aquire State Identification. "
