Information Provided by an Administrative Assistant at VSPW on 9/5/07:
"Receiving ("RC") processing takes about 60 to 90 days, depending on the number of inmates requiring processing. A thorough review of all factors that would effect any medical needs or custodial concerns is reviewed during this time. Once consideration is given to all information obtained, the inmate is placed in general population, where additional factors are considered prior to the placement in an appropriate program or assignment. This process is explained during inmate orientation. All inmates should be aware that it is essential to attend all appointments to which they are ducated and remain disciplinary free while on the "RC". Failure to do so can rsult in longer processing times.
First time at VSPW? Some helpful information:
If you've never had a loved one sent to prison before, this can be a difficult time. Your sister, daughter, mother, wife, or other relative is being sent from the county jail to a California State lockup. You don't know exactly where that is, or how to find out anything about where she is, or what is happening to her. You probably don't know that she won't be able to call you for a while. You don't have an address, and you don't know how to write to her. You may have heard horrible stories about the state prisons, and you fear for her safety. Maybe she's got special medical needs, and you are afraid she won't be taken care of properly.
We hope that the different pages on this website will help you understand the system better, and give you the confidence to find the answers you need and keep in contact with your loved one.
The "Reception Handbook" is given to all new inmates at their orientation. You can download your own copy. You will need Adobe Reader.

Read a story written by a first-time inmate about when she got to VSPW, and what her experience was like during the first two weeks:
Words of An Inmate: What Receiving Was Like
One of our IFC members sent a letter to a grandfather about A Yard. His granddaughter was about to be sent from the county jail down to VSPW. This letter talks about how to get a CDCR number, what address to use, and a lot of other helpful information. Take a look at this letter at:
Letter to a New Inmate's Grandfather - What to Expect
. You may want to copy this letter and send it to your inmate loved one, to help her with some information before she leaves the county.
Please feel free to ask questions, or give us suggestions on what else you'd like to know. We will post it here for future reference. Email Nancy at:
